Cross streets at 110th Street in Manhattan were shaped by the elevated railways that ran above them, and this view records one such crossing around 1900. The steel structure carries the tracks over the avenue, with the street below given over to wagons, pedestrians, and the shadow of the trestle. Elevated lines were built in the 1870s and 1880s to relieve congestion at street level, and by the turn of the century they had become a defining part of daily life in the city. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format glass negatives documented American cities and landscapes for decades.
