The subject here is a marine guard aboard the U.S.S. *New York*, a steel armored cruiser commissioned in 1893 and one of the most prominent American warships of its day. Its crew took part in the Spanish-American War in 1898, including the Santiago campaign, where the ship served as a flagship. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, captures the formal bearing expected of Marine detachments on naval vessels, with the inspection setting reflecting the discipline that governed shipboard life. The company's large-format plates from this period document the growing role of the modern steel navy in American public life.
