Here the U.S.S. New York is seen at Hampton Roads, Virginia, as a landing party returns from shore. Commissioned in 1893, the New York was one of the navy's early steel armored cruisers and later served in the Spanish-American War. Hampton Roads, near Old Point Comfort, was a busy naval anchorage, and the scene captures the daily traffic of boats moving between ship and shore. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American places and everyday life in these years.
