Seated at left in this group portrait is Captain French Ensor Chadwick, photographed with the officers of the U.S.S. New York, an armored cruiser that had been a prominent ship of the U.S. Navy during the Spanish-American War of 1898. The image dates to 1899, the year after that conflict, when the navy was still adjusting to its new status as a world power with an expanded fleet. Group portraits like this one recorded a ship's command and were often made for official or personal use. The picture is a large glass dry-plate negative, and it is attributed to the Detroit Publishing Company's photographers based on the numbering of surrounding negatives.
