The armored cruiser USS *New York* was one of the steel warships the U.S. Navy commissioned in the early 1890s, as the country began building a modern fleet. The ship later saw action in the Spanish-American War of 1898, when it fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. These two close-variant glass negatives, measuring 8 by 10 inches, were made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of ships and cities to a wide public. The company's 1901 catalog helps date the pair to the late 1890s or early 1900s, a period when American naval power was becoming a source of national pride.
