Built in 1748 on the Bronx estate of the Van Cortlandt family, this Georgian-style house was already more than 150 years old when the Detroit Publishing Company made this negative around 1906. George Washington stayed there during the Revolutionary War, and the house remains one of the oldest surviving buildings in New York City. By this time the Bronx had been part of the city for about eight years, and the surrounding land was becoming Van Cortlandt Park, so the photograph shows the mansion as it moved from private home toward public landmark.
