Providence's depot for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad served one of the busiest rail networks in southern New England in the early 1900s. The photograph was made around 1906 on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that recorded fine architectural detail. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and sold views of American cities, towns and railroad routes, issued many pictures like this one, so the view was meant to show the city's modern transportation as well as the building itself.
