A diesel-electric locomotive of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad is the subject here, one of the photographs the Association of American Railroads made of the line's equipment sometime between 1930 and 1960. The New Haven was based in Connecticut and ran commuter and intercity trains into New York City, so its engines worked in both states named in the record. Diesel-electric units, which generated their own electricity to drive traction motors, spread across American railroads during those decades because they needed less fuel handling and servicing than steam power. Pictures like this one recorded a turning point in railroad technology.
