The steamship *Pennsylvania* was part of a railroad's water route, carrying passengers and freight between points that the rails alone could not connect. It belonged to the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad, whose service linked the Delmarva Peninsula and Virginia ports with New York across open water. Around 1905 the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of towns, ships and scenery to travelers and promoters, recorded the vessel on a large glass plate negative. The picture shows a working steamer of the kind that moved railroad traffic across busy coastal waters in the early 1900s.
