The caption "Sec'y Houston" is a short news-style title, and the Bain News Service, which supplied it, did not always verify its identifications. Its abbreviation points to a government or corporate secretary named Houston rather than to the city of Houston, despite this picture's place on the gallery's Houston board. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made for a press photo agency that sent pictures of officials, events and everyday news to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Viewers should treat the identity and date as provisional until a cataloger confirms them.
