This long panoramic print, measuring 8 by 40 inches and made on gelatin silver paper, was deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office by Cecil Thomson Studios on July 11, 1949. Its wide format suits a skyline, letting the viewer take in the downtown towers in one sweep. Houston was growing quickly after World War II, driven by the oil and petrochemical industries and a rising population, and its downtown was expanding upward as new office buildings went up. Pictures like this one record that transition, showing a city whose skyline was then far lower than it is today.
