Fort Sam Houston, the Army post on the north side of San Antonio, is the subject here, shown in one of the glass negatives that the Bain News Service produced for its wire photo operation. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York in the early 1900s, and it sent staff photographers and purchased images to newspapers across the country, so its files capture everyday scenes and notable places of the period. The Library of Congress holds the collection, but the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact date and vantage point are uncertain. Fort Sam Houston has been a major military installation since the late 1870s, and images like this one help show how the post looked during the era when the Army was expanding its presence in Texas.
