This Bain Collection photograph shows a squad of cavalrymen from Company M, 11th Regiment, lining up at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, sometime between 1911 and 1912. The fort sits in San Antonio, not in the city of Houston for which this gallery board is named, though the post was named for the Texas hero Sam Houston. Bain was a news photographer whose pictures were often sent out to newspapers, and the caption tracings point to Quartermaster equipment and military cookery, which suggests the men may be waiting for a meal or issue. The record gives few further details, so the scene is best read as a window onto daily routine at a frontier-era cavalry post in the early twentieth century.
