A company of mounted soldiers stands drawn up in formation at Fort Sam Houston, the army post in San Antonio, Texas, in a photograph identified as Company M of the 11th Cavalry. The record dates it only to sometime between 1911 and 1912, a period when cavalry still formed a large part of the U.S. Army. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs, and its catalog tags also mention quartermaster and barber subjects, hinting at the daily work of keeping a company running. The ranks and uniforms show how formal drill remained before motor transport began to change army life.
