Standing outside a canvas tent, Gen. Ralph W. Hoyt is the figure at the center of this view of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, taken sometime between 1911 and 1912. The post, established in 1876 and named for Texas hero Sam Houston, was a major Army installation where cavalry and quartermaster units were stationed, and tent quarters were a common sight on its grounds. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs assembled by a New York photographer and later acquired by the Library of Congress. The caption details are unverified, and the fort is in San Antonio rather than Houston.
