Taken at Fort Sam Houston, the Army post in San Antonio, this January 1927 photograph shows the School for Bakers and Cooks run in connection with the 1st Bakery Company of the Quartermaster Corps. The Quartermaster Corps handled supplies and food for soldiers, so training men to bake bread and prepare meals was a practical need for a peacetime army. The picture was made by the San Antonio Photo Service, and because its caption card is old and unverified, details beyond the location and date are worth checking against other sources.
