The record places this view at Hadamar, a small town in Hesse, but its caption also names Frankfort on Main, a much larger city some distance away, so the location is worth reading with some caution. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process that transferred photographic images onto lithographic stones and printed them in layers of color, which gives them the bright, almost painted tones seen here. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, issued the view in its 1905 catalog of German scenes, and the print itself dates from roughly the 1890s.
