The Römerberg in Frankfurt am Main, the old market square shown here in soft photochrom color, is framed by gabled houses that were once private merchant homes. In 1405 the city council acquired several of them to form the Römer, its town hall, whose Kaisersaal later hosted banquets after imperial coronations. Detroit Publishing Co. issued this view in its Views of Germany series around the turn of the twentieth century, when photochrom printing, which layered many hand-prepared stone plates, gave such scenes their bright, painterly tones.
