Rising from Mount's Bay just off Penzance, St Michael's Mount is a tidal island that is reached on foot across a causeway only when the tide is low. The rocky summit holds a church and a castle-like structure that grew out of a medieval priory founded by monks who had ties to Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. This photochrom print, made in the 1890s, shows the island as tourists of the period would have seen it, with its fortified walls and harbor. Photochrom was a color process that let publishers sell views of scenic places to a broad market, so the picture is as much a record of late Victorian travel as of the island itself.
