Lichtenstein Castle rises from a sheer limestone cliff on the Swabian Alb in southwestern Germany, and this photochrom shows the pale walls against the surrounding rock and forest. The castle was rebuilt in the 1840s in a romantic revival style, inspired by Wilhelm Hauff's popular 1826 novel *Lichtenstein*, which tied the crag to stories of medieval chivalry. By the 1890s the site drew many visitors, and photochrom, a Swiss color process, produced vivid views like this one for sale as souvenirs.
