Hohensalzburg is the fortress that crowns the Mönchsberg above the city of Salzburg, and this photochrom shows it as it looked in the 1890s, when the color process was still a novelty for travel views. The castle dates to the eleventh century and was expanded over the following centuries, so its walls and towers hold layers of medieval and early modern building. Photochroms were made by a hand-colored lithographic method that gave tourists a painted-looking view of famous sites, and this example, numbered 1756 in its series, reflects the postcard-era appetite for scenic images of Austria.
