Few English ruins sit as dramatically as Corfe Castle, which guards a gap in the Purbeck Hills of Dorset. The Norman fortress, begun soon after the Conquest, served as a royal stronghold for centuries until Parliamentarian forces slighted it in 1646 after a long Royalist siege, leaving the broken walls seen here. The catalog files the view under islands, though the Isle of Purbeck is not an island at all but a chalk-and-limestone upland. This color photochrom, made in the 1890s by a process that printed tinted layers from stone plates over a black-and-white photograph, shows how visitors of that era pictured the ruin.
