Set on a hill in southwestern Germany, Hohenzollern Castle is the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty, whose members ruled Brandenburg-Prussia and later the German Empire. The fortress seen here is largely a neo-Gothic rebuilding from the 1850s and 1860s, commissioned by the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV, which turned a medieval stronghold into a monument to the family's past. This print was made by photochrom, a process that transferred a photograph to stone and added color by hand in several layers, and Swiss workshops used it to produce inexpensive tourist views in the 1890s. The bird's-eye vantage shows how the castle crowns its hill above the surrounding countryside.
