This photochrom shows Canterbury Cathedral from the northwest, a view that brings the Bell Harry tower and the cathedral's long roofline into one frame. The photochrom process, developed by the Swiss firm Photochrom Co. in the 1880s, layered several lithographic stones to produce color prints that looked close to hand-tinted photographs. Such views were sold to travelers and collectors in the 1890s, when Canterbury drew steady numbers of pilgrims and tourists to its medieval church. The print's catalog number, 11143, places it within the firm's numbered series of English views.
