Schloss Stolzenfels sits on a steep slope above the Rhine near Koblenz, and this photochrom print shows the castle together with its chapels, the detail that gives the title its plural "Capellen." The castle was rebuilt in the 1840s in a neo-Gothic style for Frederick William IV of Prussia, who was then the Prussian crown prince, so by the 1890s it was a well-known landmark on the Rhine tourist route. Photochrom was a commercial color process, and this print's bird's-eye view shows how the river, the village and the hillside fit together. The print is catalogued as number 17980 in the Library of Congress collection.
