Titled in both French and Russian, this view of the Church of St. Dmitry in Kharkiv shows an Orthodox house of worship in what was then one of the largest cities in the Russian Empire's southern provinces. The photochrom process behind it, developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob, combined a photograph with several lithographic stones to add soft color, and it was popular with travelers in the 1890s. Numbered prints like this one were sold as souvenirs of distant places, so the image records both a church and the period's appetite for tourist views.
