Houston, Texas, hosted the Democratic National Convention in late June and early July 1928, filling the Sam Houston Coliseum with delegates from across the country. The city was growing fast as a port and oil center, with the Houston Ship Channel linking it to the Gulf and refineries and cotton warehouses shaping its economy. Its population was near 300,000 by the 1930 census, and downtown hotels and businesses turned out to host the visitors. Inside the hall, the central fight was over Al Smith, the New York governor who was the first Catholic nominated for president by a major party, and over Prohibition, which divided Southern and urban delegates. The convention's choices and its bitter debates made Houston a national stage in a presidential year.
