North Texas State Teachers College in Denton was in 1928 a state-supported school whose main job was training teachers for the public schools of Texas, a mission that shaped its campus and daily life. The college had grown out of the normal school founded in Denton around the turn of the century, and it drew most of its students from farm towns and small communities across North Texas. Denton itself was a county seat set amid cotton and grain country, so the college and the town depended on the same agricultural economy and on the railroad lines that carried crops and people through the region. Students in that period were mostly preparing to teach in rural and town schools, and the campus was a place where many of them first lived away from home. The school's buildings and grounds in the photograph reflect a campus still expanding under state appropriations.
