Winter Garden, a stretch of South Texas brush country southwest of San Antonio, was one of the state's most productive winter vegetable districts in 1928. Farmers there grew spinach, onions and other greens during the mild months and shipped them by rail to northern cities, where fresh produce was scarce in winter. Much of the harvest was cut and loaded by hand, by crews that included many Mexican and Mexican-American families who followed the crops through the season. This scene of spinach cutting shows that labor, the same work that would later make nearby Crystal City known as the spinach capital of the country.
