Houston in 1924 had grown to roughly 138,000 residents, according to the 1920 census, and the city was reaching well past its old downtown blocks along Buffalo Bayou. The Ship Channel had been open for a decade, so refineries, pipelines, and oil-field supply firms were gathering along the water, while cotton still moved through the compresses and warehouses near the bayou. That autumn Texans elected Miriam "Ma" Ferguson as governor, a campaign run in the shadow of her husband's impeachment and a contest that split voters over the Ku Klux Klan's influence in state politics. Downtown families would have measured their year by the oil boom, the price of cotton, and the streetcar lines that carried clerks and mill hands to new subdivisions.
