Houston in 1921 was a city on the rise, its economy tied to cotton, lumber, rice, and the Houston Ship Channel, which had opened in 1914 and turned the bayou town into a deep-water port. Oil was reshaping the region after the Spindletop discovery in 1901, and Houston's downtown business district along Main Street and Texas Avenue served as the banking and commercial center for a growing population that had passed 100,000 by the early 1920s. Railroads converged on the city, carrying cotton and cattle outward and goods inward, while department stores, hotels, and office buildings crowded the blocks shown in this view. Residents would have known Houston as the commercial heart of the Gulf Coast, a place where merchants and oilmen were gaining influence in state affairs.
