Baltimore in 1904 was a major Atlantic port, and its waterfront handled grain, coal, tobacco, and other goods moving between ships, warehouses, and rail lines. Earlier that year, the Great Baltimore Fire swept through the downtown business district and destroyed a large part of the commercial core, leaving many firms without offices or warehouses. Rebuilding was already under way, and the city's population, roughly half a million at the 1900 census, was spreading into new neighborhoods and streetcar suburbs. Shipping, canning, and the oyster and seafood trade on the Chesapeake gave the harbor its daily rhythm, and residents knew the water's edge as the place where the city's work and its fortunes met.
