Baltimore, Maryland, in 1913 was a port city of more than half a million people, still rebuilding its downtown after the Great Fire of 1904 destroyed much of the business district. Its harbor shipped grain, coal, tobacco, and cotton, while the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered in the city, linked its warehouses and factories to markets across the country. Clothing makers, canneries, and metalworks employed many immigrant and native-born workers, and rows of brick rowhouses climbed the hills north and west of the center. Residents knew their city for its oyster and crab trade and its busy waterfront. This view shows a working city on the eve of the European war, which would soon reshape American shipping.
