Baltimore's harbor in 1905 was one of the busiest working waterfronts on the Atlantic seaboard, with piers and wharves handling coal, grain, tobacco, cotton, and fruit bound for European and Caribbean markets. The city had rebuilt much of its downtown after the Great Fire of 1904, which destroyed more than 1,500 buildings in the commercial district, and shipping and rail traffic were returning to normal as the new structures went up. Canneries, foundries, shipyards, and the Bethlehem Steel works at Sparrows Point, begun in the 1880s, made the port a center of heavy industry. Ferries, tugs, schooners, and steamships crowded the basin, and the tall warehouses along the water symbolized a city that measured itself by its commerce.
