Baltimore's harbor in 1912 was a working waterfront of piers and wharves along the Patapsco, where freight moved between railroad cars and ships bound for Southern and foreign ports. Dockworkers, teamsters, and clerks depended on the shipping trade, and the city's population had grown steadily as workers arrived for jobs on the water and in nearby factories. That summer Baltimore drew national attention when the Democratic National Convention met in the city and nominated Woodrow Wilson for president, filling hotels and crowding downtown streets with delegates and reporters. Many residents who lived near the docks would have known the harbor first as a source of wages and daily commotion, a place where the city's fortunes rose and fell with the cargo passing through.
