Baltimore, Maryland, in 1912 was a port city of roughly 550,000 people, and its harbor, rail yards, and factory districts set the rhythm of daily life. The Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 had destroyed much of the downtown core, and by 1912 rebuilt blocks and new office buildings were still changing the skyline. Canning, clothing manufacturing, tobacco, and flour milling employed large numbers of workers, many of them immigrants who lived in rowhouse neighborhoods near the water. That summer the city also hosted the Democratic National Convention at the Fifth Regiment Armory, where delegates nominated Woodrow Wilson for president.
