Castor and Pollux, the heavenly twins, shown here mounted and carrying spears, are figures from Greek and Roman myth who were said to be sons of Leda and brothers of Helen of Troy. In classical stories they were celebrated horsemen and fighters, and later tradition placed them among the stars as the constellation Gemini. The record does not give a date or maker for this engraving, so its age and origin remain unconfirmed. Engravings of these twins were popular in European book illustration, where artists used them to show classical virtue and heroic action.
