Few sites in the Lincoln story are as often pictured as the small log cabin in Kentucky long identified as the president's birthplace, and this view shows it as it appeared in the early 1900s. The cabin had stood on the Sinking Spring farm near Hodgenville, but it had been dismantled and exhibited at expositions in the 1890s before being returned to Kentucky. Its link to Lincoln's birth has never been fully settled, so the record's note that the identification is unverified is worth keeping in mind. The picture still shows how the cabin was becoming a symbol of frontier humility in the years when the Lincoln legend was taking firm shape.
