Few symbols of Lincoln's humble beginnings have been as widely pictured as the log cabin, and this view shows one of the rough frontier structures that many Americans associated with his early life in Kentucky and Indiana. Around the 1920s, several cabins were claimed as Lincoln's birthplace or boyhood home, and they drew crowds, souvenir sellers and newspaper photographers. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs that documents American public life in the early twentieth century. Its cabin-focused framing reflects how the log house had become a emblem of the self-made frontier story.
