Subtitled "The Early Life of Abraham Lincoln," this lithograph by J. Mayer & Co. of Boston presents his story from its frontier beginnings. Printed around 1865, shortly after Lincoln's assassination in April of that year, it belongs to a wave of images that portrayed him as a self-made man who rose from rural poverty. The log cabin had already become a powerful political emblem during his 1860 campaign, and printmakers kept using it to tie Lincoln's humble origins to American ideals of opportunity.
