Among the many Civil War-era portraits on this board, this glass negative stands out for its subject: Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln, photographed in the early 1860s. The image was made by a wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, sensitized, and exposed while still wet, so each portrait demanded quick, careful work in the studio. It belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, the large body of Washington-area portraits assembled in part by Mathew Brady and his associate Levin Handy, which now resides at the Library of Congress. Mrs. Lincoln's public image during these years was closely watched, and surviving likenesses like this one help document how she presented herself during her husband's presidency.
