This print pairs Lincoln's likeness with a letter addressed to Mrs. Bixby, a Massachusetts mother said to have lost several sons in the Civil War. The portrait is a steel engraving by John Chester Buttre, made from a photograph by Mathew Brady, and the c. 1891 date points to a later printing of an image that circulated widely in the decades after Lincoln's death. The letter, dated November 1864, became one of the most reprinted documents of the war, but historians have long doubted that Lincoln wrote it, and many credit it to a secretary or another writer.
