Lincoln's face turns to the right here, a pose that gave the portrait its own identity among the many likenesses of him circulating in the late 1850s and early 1860s. Images like this one were typically reproduced as engravings or small prints for newspapers, campaign material and parlor walls, so the printed版本 carried his appearance to audiences who would never meet him. The period was one of intense political attention to Lincoln as he rose from Illinois lawyer and former congressman to a serious contender for the presidency in 1860. Pictures of him from this moment are worth studying closely, because the choice of pose, lighting and dress shows how a rising politician presented himself to a public still learning his face.
