Among the many Lincoln portraits in circulation, this one stands out for its date: it was made on November 8, 1863, only days before Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg to deliver his address. The photographer, Alexander Gardner, was a leading Washington portrait maker who had worked with Mathew Brady before setting up his own studio, and his sittings with Lincoln produced some of the most widely reproduced images of the president. Shot head-and-shoulders and facing the camera, the picture shows Lincoln at a moment when the Civil War was still being fought and the Union's direction remained uncertain. Its survival in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division makes it a useful record of how Lincoln presented himself to the public during the war.
