Of the many profile likenesses Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin made in the United States, this head-and-shoulders engraving shows Thomas Jefferson in Washington, D.C., in 1805, during his second term as president. Saint-Mémin traced each sitter's outline with a device called the physionotrace, reduced it with a pantograph, and then engraved the result, which let him produce a precise likeness quickly and in multiple impressions. The crisp profile set against a plain ground reflects the neoclassical taste of the period, when silhouette-like profiles were fashionable among the young republic's officials and merchants.
