Thomas Jefferson appears here in a head-and-shoulders study turned slightly to the left, a pose that was widely reused in the decades when his likeness was copied for schoolbooks, commemorative prints, and patriotic displays. The image dates to roughly 1890 through 1940, a period when the country was building its public memory of the founders and when printmakers and publishers drew heavily on well-known portraits, most famously Gilbert Stuart's work, to meet demand. Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president, was a natural subject for such reproduction. Viewers today often study these images to see how his features were standardized for a national audience.
