This engraving shows Thomas Jefferson in left profile, rendered in a classical Greek style that borrows the look of ancient coins and medals. The record credits the engraving to S.L.S. and names G.C. Stuart as the source painting, a reference to the Stuart family of painters, most famously Gilbert Stuart, who painted Jefferson several times. The profile format reflects the neoclassical taste of Jefferson's own era, when he admired Greek and Roman learning and architecture. The c. 1911 date refers to when the print was made, more than a century after Jefferson's time, so it reflects how later generations chose to picture him.
