This photograph reproduces a sketch Thomas Jefferson drew for the U.S. Capitol, a building he helped shape at a time when the new federal government had no permanent home. In 1792 the commissioners in Washington opened a design competition for the building, and Jefferson, then Secretary of State, was among those who offered ideas, drawing on his admiration for classical architecture. The competition was won by William Thornton's design, but Jefferson's influence on the Capitol's classical character is still visible in the building. The print lets viewers see his hand in the planning of the nation's legislative seat.
