Jefferson's own handwriting is not reproduced here, but the printed text of his June 1826 letter to Roger C. Weightman, then mayor of Washington, declines an invitation to the city's Fourth of July celebration. Jefferson cited his age and frail health, and he died on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The small wood engraving, signed by the engraver Anderson after a drawing by Brown, shows how newspapers and keepsake publications of the period reproduced such letters as public tributes. Its brief text turned a polite refusal into one of the last public statements of a Founding Father.
