The bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson that stands at the center of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., is the figure this picture focuses on, set beneath the memorial's domed interior. The memorial was dedicated in 1943, on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, and its design draws on the Pantheon in Rome and on Jefferson's own neoclassical tastes as an architect. The statue, by sculptor Rudulph Evans, shows Jefferson in a standing pose, and the walls carry inscribed excerpts from his writings, including passages on religious freedom and independence. Visitors who look closely will see how the light from the open colonnade falls across the figure.
